Industrial Footprint Project Launched
"I believe that finding an inclusive way to look at
economic, social, and environmental impacts from large industrial facilities
will provide a new strategic approach to help set priorities."
- Jay Manning, Director of Ecology, in his 2/8/08
letter to PTPC.
February 20, 2008
The Washington State Department of
Ecology (Ecology) will lead two community stakeholder meetings in
Port Townsend as part of its Industrial
Footprint Project at Port Townsend Paper Corporation (PTPC).
The community meetings will be held at the Jefferson
County Fairgrounds, 4907 Landes Street, Port Townsend, in the Erickson
Building Dance Hall, on Thursday Feb. 28, 6:00-9:00 p.m. and Tuesday
Mar. 4, 6:00-9:00 p.m.
“We invite members of the community to participate in this unique forum.
PTPC strives to go beyond compliance and is seeking suggestions from the
community on how we can continue to improve the sustainability of our
operations,” said Bruce McComas, Vice President of Operations and General
Manager at PTPC.
The purpose of the first meeting is to learn more about the Industrial
Footprint Project. The second meeting will allow those interested to make
suggestions about performance indicators and project strategies.
All community stakeholders are invited to attend including residents,
mill employees, local community members, labor union representatives,
public interest and environmental organizations, local government representatives,
business and civic leaders, school and youth representatives and members
of the general public.
From now until April 2009, the Industrial Footprint Project aims to develop
performance indicators that will measure sustainability and evaluate the
performance of participating pulp and paper facilities. Local communities,
the Department of Ecology, consultant Earth
Economics and industry experts will develop these indicators.
The Port Townsend Paper family
of companies employs 800 people in Washington State and Canada, 315
of which work at the Port Townsend mill. PTPC also manufactures approximately
1.8 billion square feet of corrugated products each year at its three
Crown Packaging plants, two BoxMaster plants, and one TekPac Packaging
plant in British Columbia and Alberta.
